Hiring activity related to cloud increased by a CAGR of 56% in the mining industry since 2020

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 64%, emerged as the top cloud-related job roles within the mining industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 90% year-on-year in 2021 and rising by 18% year-on-year in 2022. 

Management occupations came in second with a share of 13%, with new job postings rising by 83% year-on-year in 2021 and rising by 27% year-on-year in 2022. 

The other prominent cloud roles include architecture and engineering occupations with a 7% share, business and financial operations occupations with a 4% share and installation, maintenance, and repair occupations with 3%.

The top five companies in the mining industry accounted for 61% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Komatsu, Caterpillar, ABB, Deere and Eaton. Together they accounted for a combined share of 61% of all cloud-related new jobs in the mining industry. 

Komatsu posted 2,370 cloud-related jobs since 2020, followed by Caterpillar with 2,267 jobs, and ABB with 2,077 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database. 

New job postings by Komatsu increased by 373% year-on-year in 2021 and rose by 21% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Caterpillar increased by 51% in 2021 and declined by 4% in 2022.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 42% share of total new job postings since 2020

The largest share of cloud-related new job postings in the mining industry since 2020 was in the US with 42%, followed by India (12%) and Canada (10%). The share represented by the US decreased by five percentage points from 44% in 2021 to 39% in 2022.
