Further reading: Potassium could rival lithium for batteries

Potassium could provide a cheaper, more readily available material to use in place of lithium in metal batteries, according to researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.


The research demonstrated that the problem of dendrites – needle-like structures that plague metal batteries and can cause short circuits, failures or even fires – can be overcome to create a battery that performs almost as well as a lithium-ion battery.

De Grey discovers atypical gold system at Hemi prospect

De Grey has unearthed a large gold system at its Hemi prospect in Western Australia with "some of the best discovery intersections" the company's exploration manager has seen. Results include 93 metres at 3.3 grams per tonne from 39 metres.

Sandvik unveils automation-ready ITH longhole drill with V-30 head

Sandvik has launched its first automation-ready underground in-the-hole (ITH) longhole drill for production drilling, service support and mechanised slot raising. The DU412i drill rig is the first fully automated ITH longhole drill introduced by the company. It is used for various ITH applications.

Kenmare reports first production from Moma’s WCP C in Mozambique

Titanium minerals and zircon producer Kenmare Resources has announced the production of the first heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) from Wet Concentrator Plant C (WCP C). The floating WCP C development project is at Kenmare’s Moma titanium minerals mine in northern Mozambique.

Ontario supports innovation projects in mining industry

The Government of Ontario in Canada is investing more than C$10.5m ($7.86m) in 28 companies that supply products and services to the mining industry, supporting the development of new and innovative mining technologies. In the latest funding announcement, SHYFTinc will receive C$900,000 ($673,722) from the provincial government in order to support job creation and economic growth in northern Ontario.
