Zijin to buy Newmont’s Akyem gold mine in Ghana for $1bn
Zijin Mining has announced the acquisition of the Akyem gold mine in Ghana from Newmont in a $1bn deal. The Akyem mine, one of Ghana’s largest gold operations, has been producing gold since October 2013. The move aligns with Zijin Mining’s goal to produce more than 100 tonnes (t) of gold per year by 2028. The Akyem mine has an annual processing capacity of 8.5mt, with gold production in recent years reaching 11.9t, 13.1t and 9.2t. The purchase marks Zijin’s seventh gold mine acquisition since 2020.
General Motors to invest $625m in Lithium Americas JV
General Motors (GM) Holdings has agreed to form a joint venture with Lithium Americas for developing the Thacker Pass lithium project in Humboldt County, Nevada. Under the agreement, GM will acquire a 38% stake in Thacker Pass for a total of $625m, comprising $430m in cash to support Phase 1 construction and a $195m letter of credit facility. Lithium Americas will manage the project on behalf of both parties.
QC Copper to acquire remaining 50% of Roger project
Canadian company QC Copper and Gold has entered an agreement to acquire the remaining 50% interest in the Roger gold-copper project from SOQUEM, a subsidiary of Investissement Québec. To finalise this acquisition, QC Copper will make an initial payment of C$75,000 ($54,220) and subsequent share payments totalling C$1.6m over four years. The transaction awaits approval from the TSX Venture Exchange and is expected to close by the end of October 2025.
Aurum Resources makes takeover bid for Mako Gold
Australia-based Aurum Resources has signed a bid implementation agreement that will see Aurum acquire all issued shares and options of Mako Gold. The off-market takeover bid is set to combine Aurum’s balance sheet and drilling efficiencies with Mako’s assets in northern Côte d’Ivoire, to form an emerging exploration and development gold business in West Africa. Shareholders in Mako will receive one Aurum share for every 25.1 Mako shares they hold.
